My Idea:

Building

Have it so the only way you can build or destroy is if you are in a towny'd area and you are a part of that town. If you want to cut down a tree or gather anything from the surface or underground thats not in your town, you create a "Temporary towny" which gives a protection barrier of about 10 blocks for as long as you want for up to 5 minutes. You may only have one "Temporary towny" on at all times, and you may not make a "Temporary towny" within a 20 block radius from a towny'd area.

Mining

If you want to mine then you make a "Mine Towny" which will give you a 10x10x20(down) or so area to build a little protected house and mine underground. If you are below Y: 50 then it is a free zone which means any build/destroy for anybody. You may only have one "Mine Towny" at a time.

What does this fix?

Griefing and unlawful entry to ones place using glitches

The the only real choice we have to not get griefed is to build a giant 500 block high box to stop them

I believe the new mod, "Societies", when it's completed, will offer the kind of protection you're talking about (in terms of preventing people from destroying blocks from outside the area) but I really don't like the idea of having to towny an area every time I want to gather wood or flowers or anything else on the surface.

Not that this would affect me much, since my tree farm is underground.

Yes actually. They spilled all our lava outside and made unnecessary blocks in places while also stealing our blocks

Since this is an idea thread, here's an idea: how about the death chest mod? Not sure if it works on SMP, but the basic gist of it is that on death, if you have a chest in your inventory, the chest is placed on the ground and your items also placed in that chest. This way, if you die underground, your items won't necessarily be lost forever, provided you can find the chest again.

I think theres already a mod for that. But I also agree that its a pain to look for your items again because they are scattered everywhere

Yeah, I have it in SSP, not sure if there's one for SMP though.

I think I saw the death chest mod somewhere in SMP.

I think a mod where you play as a zombie (Spawn at night and die in the sun) would be interesting.

its called Deadmans chest and yes this mod used to exist back in 2.0 when Hmod was working. i dont know why they never re added it, it was a useful mod especially when building large projects by your self, or working with lava, since u were likely to die.

The way it worked back in 2.0 is that if you had a chest in your inventory it would make a chest were you died with your stuff in it. Unfortunately if you died in lava all your items were destroyed.

I think death chest works but is not optimized for SMP.
