Libya and other news topics
I've been following this on the News, and man, it look like we may have a zero casualty war.
Not that it has been a war, just a alot of sorties.
And that's the key. No soldiers on the ground, just pilots in the sky going at a few hundred miles an hour.
Japan's tsunami . . . wow. Just unbelievable. I've already donated, but I still feel bad for those without houses or clean water or electricity. Hope my money finds some warmth or food with them.

They didn't even have an air force. Good thing too, or else those rebels would have been crushed.igortv123 wrote:Didnt we take out their entire air force? Tomahawks, those things could take out my enitre campus.

I swear I heard about tomahawk missiles being fired off shore. Wonder what they were shooting then?Sevyn wrote:They didn't even have an air force. Also while tomahawks did not take out air force, there was one, the point of the no fly zone was so they would be grounded.

Re: Libya and other news topics
the Libyans haven't left their bases due to being greatly outnumbered and out gunned by the more modern Nato Jets. The only plane that did take off from a Libyan airbase was an ancient 1950's eastern european jet which was quickly shot down by a french Rafale. Now the nato forces main role is to take out key area's in Col Gaddafi's military.
also no offence sevyn but there are many casualties. Yes as far as us rich westerners are concerned none of our pilots in thier high tech jets or our sailors in thier frigates and sub's have been killed but on the ground countless Libyans are dying so no its not a no casualty war. (sorry don't mean to be a jerk about it)

Re: Libya and other news topics
Is there a simple way of explaining what is actually happening over in Libya.
All I know if is some election that no one wanted so there was a big rally? - I don't follow the News often, just for the weather.

Re: Libya and other news topics
1. Qaddafi ( the dictator leader of Libya ) is being pushed out of office by rebels in Libya.
2. Qaddafi used his air force to bomb the rebels
3. The Rebels cried for support from the U.N. to stop the air strikes.
4. The U.N. agreed and Libya became a No-Fly-Zone, all Libyan air vehicles were grounded
5. The rebels don't have a stable government of their own, the U.S. is reluctant to help the rebels as they are very shady and are linked to Al-Qaeda ( terrorists )
6. Rebels are still getting beaten down by Qaddafi's strong land vehicles
7. Qaddafi's 'inner circle' is falling apart ( his close advisers/allies )
8. Qaddafi's sons are backstabbing him by trying to gain civilian support so that they can rule Libya in a democratic fashion.
Annnnddddd that's about it. I may have missed some, but not much.

Re: Libya and other news topics
Adding onto Shigan...
-Rebels used to be gaining ground when we helped out, however now we probably might as well not be there
-Many arguments are going on about why we're even there... Which is pointless because we are
-Syria is also rising up, however it isn't quite as violent... for the moment
-Western forces are much too powerful for the Libyan government to do anything about.

Re: Libya and other news topics
adding onto you both now
basically the people of libya are sick of their dictator and want him gone.
Rebels start uprising and take eastern Cities now a big war has taken place
Nato jets sent in to stop gaddafi using his air force (they are also taking out key ground targets e.g tanks and artillery)
French are main part of this force with over half the Nato military present being french
There are no rebel connections with al-qaeda (even if the American media says so)... what the USA is worried about is the fact that the last time America supported rebels by arming them it was the Afghanistani people against Russia. These afghanistani rebels then turned their attention to terrorism and now had US weapons to help them do it.
There is unrest through out the middle east and africa with unrest in syria, yemen, ivory coast and other nations who's names escape me. There has even been some unrest in Iran (although i doubt that will come to much).

Re: Libya and other news topics
I get it now.
Thanks, lol need all of those examples to understand it properly... -.-
I never trust the media, they feed lies and make everything either worse than it is, or not as bad as it actually is. So in all up, if someone assassinated the dictator - the majority of this would be over?

Re: Libya and other news topics
maybe but there would have to be a lot of political re-building to ensure a stable government. and also people know they want rid of gaddafi but they arn't sure of what to do next.
In Iraq when Hussain went there were still a lot of problems to be addressed as was probably apparent by the fact that US and British Troops still had to stay there due to high bombing and shooting rates. You can't just create a stable country in a week...it takes some time

Re: Libya and other news topics
Oh shit, the Libyans are using human shields and using similar equipment to the rebels. They're acting more like a terrorist organization everyday.
Friendly fire is never friendly.
