Should Floating Structures be allowed?

Legality of Floating Structures Empty Legality of Floating Structures

Post  Roflbeeb 2011-03-20, 2:25 pm

I have been told before that floating castles and the like are against the rules, the main reason being is that it ruins Role Playing. I honestly don't get that. In many popular Role Playing Games there are floating cities, fortresses, and airships. Why not include them in our server? For example, anyone could build a floating town so long as there was a roleplay.... thingy... that is keeping it aloft (Balloons, "magic" lapis lazuli support blocks, or [multiple] lava engine rooms). If floating castles are still a no-go, we could at least legalize airships. I mean, if you can actually work that hard to get all the wool to build sails and balloons, you should be allowed to build a monument to your tedium.

If they would have a good roleplaying reason for it (Such as lava engines) i think it would be okay. People would have to talk to some mod before building their floating building or make a thread describing why it flies.

Opinion:

I think they should be allowed. Obviously if you put a cobblebox in the sky people are going to complain, but if you can do something really cool AND realistic, go ahead. I.E, mushrooms placed to make it look like chains anchoring it to the ground.

If it has some-what of a legitimate reason, or role-play added, I agree as well. Tho someone should write rules up on this - last thing you want is some newbie to run in the server, see a floating castle, and think "Hmm, lets create a floating everything"....

IDEA: You have to apply for a permit to build a floating anything on the forums before you can begin construction. Basic app here:

Name:
Faction (if any):
What you plan to build:
How it fits into RP:
How will said structure be used:

To the people that vote no, could you please give us a reason? Overpowered, unfair, etc.?

I think I could live with floating islands with structures on top of em. But just floating structures.....game over man game over......(so no, I dislike floating structures but I'm fine with floating islands)

Why not? If they actually live in a floating structure, they must have a way to get in to it. (Craftbook Lifts, amiright?)

Ya but I had a thought that this server is more of a medieval kind of theme and to me just striaght up floating structures seems more futuristic that medieval and floating islands seems along the lines of magical which goes hand in hand with medieval.

Building on floating islands makes more sense and that was kinda what I assumed would be done when I voted "yes" Now if there was some kind of RP magic that allowed you to do it then I could see it. But that kind of "power" is pretty much reserved to wizards and since we are all pretty much normal people, well that is out.

There are naturally occurring floating islands (in minecraft)

How about you can only build structures on those, and the only thing you can build off of one are airships

I don't know... that kinda ruins the point of a floating fortress, and floating islands are generally too small to build anything on. Remember though, all floating ANYTHINGS will need to have an RP reason keeping it afloat.

You can build stuff off the ledge . . very large balconies perhaps?

Any floating structure is fine with me. Now if its a box then no, but if it has a legitimate reason then sure.

Or you could build a floating island and THEN build a floating city with large "balconies" on it. Razz

I like roflbeebs idea because id much rather have people build floating islands and then put structures on them then just floating structures.
